Congratulations to Liza McKay who has now completed her Cert III Qualification in Children Services. Liza is a valued member of our child care staff here at WFNH, and we know she is worth more than the piece of paper her qualification is written on… but we also know the dedication and hard work required on top of an already busy life parenting and working. Well done!

A real life experience… OCC and kinder treated the children to an amazing experience of the real life cycle. Children were able to watch the chicks hatch and grow over 2 weeks and they then enjoyed feeding and holding them. Some families were able to adopt the chicks and take them home as pets. Lily kept with the theme reading the book “Are you my Mother?” which the kids enjoyed.

On November 13  a fundraising event called The Eureka Climb was held to raise money for disadvantaged young people and involved participants walking or running up 88 levels or 1,642 stairs of the Eureka Tower.

A West Footscray’s local Yr 8 student Hannah, who attends Footscray City College, RAN this event and raised $425! This effort placed her as the 60th highest individual fundraiser out of 712 registrants and all up over $230,000 was raised for disadvantaged young people.

Hannah did incredibly well… it was her first attempt at the event and she ended up with the second fastest time.  A particularly impressive result considering she was only beaten by 11 seconds, and that was by an 18 yo student from the elite Victorian Institute of Sport. Brilliant effort Hannah!

Maribyrnong Council has recently worked with the Indian community to produce a DVD in Hindi about saving energy in the home. The project has been funded by the Victorian Sustainability Accord  who saw a gap in the basic environmental information available for households which speak languages other than English. The DVD called ‘A Recipe For Energy Efficiency’ features local primary students and their parents.
The launch of this DVD will take place at West Footscray Neighbourhood House and everyone is welcome for a film viewing. There will also be showbags and demonstrations from the Energy and Water Taskforce.

Meet Sarah

Thanks to all that applied for the Toy Library Coordinator’s role, we are happy to introduce Sarah Widegren as the successful candidate. The Toy Library continues to be really popular open Tuesdays and Saturday morning from 10am -12pm.

We were so happy with the turnout at our last market early in November that we thought we should go again, and get another market in before Christmas. This time round it will be a more artsy craft market, a chance for us to showcase some local talent and a chance for you to get some one-off individual christmas creations for your loved ones. Hope to see you there, we’ll certainly be ready and buzzing with the usual colour, creations, food and atmosphere… the perfect place to head on that Saturday morning stroll.

A new exhibition at Post Industrial Design (just west down Barkly St) is Sarah Watt’s 3012. This exhibition shows images of West Footscray’s quirky and diverse character, it’s really worth a look. Great to see new and interesting things in the local hood.

The Neighbourhood House are hosting another community market and we are looking for stallholders.

The market will take place in the walkway beside the library and upstairs at the Neighbourhood House on Saturday November 5 between 10am and 2pm.
